The Art History Graduate Student Association (AHGSA) will host its 45th annual symposium “Haunting the Canon: The Super-phenomena in Art” on Friday April 23, 2021. The virtual symposium is an opportunity for students and scholars across the humanities to engage in a critical dialogue while maintaining a focus on images and material objects. This year’s theme asks participants to challenge colonialist conceptions of mystical, spiritual, and alchemical subjects. The keynote speaker is Associate Professor of English at Fordham University Robb Hernández, whose revisionist scholarship concerning alternative Latinx archives, AIDS, and speculative aesthetics will be of great interest to many scholars.
The event is co-sponsored by the History of Art and Architecture, Art, Design & Architecture Museum, Black Studies, Chicano Studies, Center for Middle East Studies, Classics, English, Feminist Studies, Film and Media Studies, History, Latin American and Iberian Studies, Religious Studies, Theater and Dance, Dean Mary Hancock, Division of Humanities & Fine Arts, College of Letters & Science, Graduate Center for Literary Research, Graduate Division, Graduate Student Association, Multi-Cultural Center, and the Writing Program.
